Things to do Today...

• Quietly walk from room to room and switch off unused appliances at the wall
• Put on a cardigan instead of the heater
• Don’t drive: use a tram, train, bike or bus
• Using junk mail, cut and paste a ‘No Junk Mail’ sign for the letterbox
• Do less: go to bed early and read

Thursday 5 June is World Environment Day – the UN’s initiative to popularise reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. To really get into the spirit, calculate the household’s emissions and create an offset account. Or just slow down and spend less energy all-round.

There's a line of cyprus trees near where I park my car at work (in Melbourne). It's a cacophony of noise and high-spirits at the end of the day, and I can't resist stepping towards them, inching closer and closer, to the very same spot when the lookout's warning pierces the air and they all stop, instantaneously. Complete silence. I love it. I can't see the birds, don't even know which they are, but I know they're all looking at me. Then I retreat with a smile on my face and the temperment to handle the traffic. It makes me leave work at ten to 5 every day just to experience this little natural wonder. Just thought I'd share.

LOL! I like the thought of creating a 'no junk mail' sign with junk mail!!
Glad to have stumbled on this site as I am coming to visit Melbourne in July and am hoping not to be stressed!

I love all these points, especially the last one. Feels like we're up working closer and closer to bed time every night. like what am I doing here right now at 11:43?

Slow guides

The Slow Guides are for anybody who wants to slow down and live it up, seachange without shifting postcode. They celebrate all that’s local, natural, traditional, sensory and most of all gratifying about living in Sydney and Melbourne. Click on a book for a preview.

How to buy a book

Start off slow and get your book the old-fashioned way; pop into a store and say g’day. But if you’re too entranced with what’s happening in your garden, or too preoccupied gazing on a cloud, you could always order one online.
