Making the Cut
Dr Follicles (143 Swan St, Richmond & 240 Gertrude St, Fitzroy) is God’s gift to blokes’ grooming. Doing no-fuss cuts, it combines old barber chairs, kitschy furnishings and a shagpile of lopped locks with an exuberantly laidback vibe, rocking vinyl tunes and as much or as little chat as you can bear. Part of the prescription is a complimentary stubby of cold Coopers Pale Ale, a perfect descent into downtime.
The ladies equivalent is a little Hair Lounge in Brunswick, Corrin’s (459 Sydney Rd, enter via Sparta Place). It’s one step away from beehive-style hairdryers on floor stands, with Deco dressers, clouds of hairspray, helpful hints and handmade knickers for sale (Corrin has done a few CAE courses in her time).
Treat yourself to a do this week; it’s a too infrequent opportunity to be looked after and to chat.

Ivan's in Smith Street is up for sale sadly: it's one of the stalwarts, along with A Touch of Paris in Campbell Arcade.
But for every barber that closes another one opens; now there's All the King's Men in North Melbourne, which serves Boags.
Hey, and Dr Follicles is about to open on Barkly St, ST Kilda. Be warned, though; owner Craig doesn't like people reading in the chair while he's cutting. He finds it demeaning. Lucky he's a good talker.
I would really recommend All the Kings Men in North Melbourne... I was there last week and got the best haircut I've had in years... and the place wasn't full of wankers -the barber dude there was awesome
oh and the beer was cold.

Corrin's Hair Lounge is a cute little salon down Sparta Place in Brunswick.. Completely unpretentous, well priced (for quality), they have trash free mags and I got a free Grolsh! Pretty swell for a salon where they don't talk your head off.
